Odds and Ends
Thank you for attending this year's curriculum night. It was so great to see so many of you. If you were unable to attend, please email me and I can send you a copy of our presentation. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time with any questions, comments, or concerns! Thanks!
*Great news! The students earned their first marble party and were SO excited to have done it so early in the school year! Way to go! Mr. Potato Head got his eyes, too! We had an extra outdoor recess and what a beautiful day to be outside!
Most of the students are doing a great job getting into our classroom routine and following expectations. Some students are having a difficult time quietly listening, talking at appropriate times, and following directions. Please reinforce the importance of showing respect by listening to others (especially adults!) and following directions so we can make the best use of our time together at school. I know that they can do it! We are getting new seats next week to mark the start of a new month, so that should help with our focus.
*SEE SAW: A note was sent home with your child about our classroom See Saw account. I would encourage each family to join this great, safe website to see pictures of your child at school and pictures of their work. It's a great conversation starter to the question...what did YOU do at school today? My own boys have See Saw accounts at their schools and we love looking at what they do at school and they love to tell stories about the photos. Please email me with any questions on how to join this private group. Thanks!
UPCOMING EVENTS:
*Mon. 9/3: No School: Happy Labor Day!
* Fri. 9/7: Social Studies: Directions and Compass Rose Quiz
A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK:
*ELA: We will continue to focus on a variety of reading strategies using various types of literature. We are also starting Daily 5 centers, so we are working on the expectations of each center.
*Writing: We are going to begin learning the steps of writing a 5 paragraph essay. Your child brought home a note and a bag today. They are to put 3 items in the bag that describe something about themselves or symbolize a hobby, special event, or person in their lives. We are asking the items are brought back to school by Wed. 9/5. We will use these items as we write our 5 paragraphs. The items will remain at school for several days and be returned when the activity is over. Your child will be presenting their paper and items to the class for a presentation grade.
Your child was given a Sept. reading calendar on Friday. Please keep this in a safe spot. It is due Fri. 8/28. They need to read 20 min a day for 20 days to receive full credit. Thanks!
*Spelling: We will begin spelling on 9/10. Your child will be given a list based on their spelling inventory test. They will each receive a menu of spelling activities that will be mostly completed in school (and at home if needed). The first test will be Fri. 9/21.
*Social Studies: We are working on learning directions and the compass rose and how to use maps. A study guide was sent home today that is in a plastic sleeve so your child can practice and erase using a dry erase marker. Our first graded review will be on Fri. 9/7.
* Mrs. Olsen's math class: We will begin the unit with number sense and addition and subtraction facts. We will be taking time tests on both skills - more info coming soon! Please send your child in with a small cloth (can be an old rag or washcloth or piece of fabric like felt) or an old, clean sock to be used as a dry erase board eraser. Thanks!)
Have a great, LONG weekend!
Mrs. Olsen
