Week of 6/1

Odds and Ends:
June already!?!? Where has the year gone! We are in the final days of 3rd grade! We are looking forward to many fun events and activities to wrap up our year together.


UPCOMING EVENTS:

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK:

*Reading: We began a unit on biographies and your child has chosen a famous person in history to do a short report on. We will continue this project and share our findings next week. All facts and character traits (they have a notes pages to complete) should be done by Tues. 6/2.

*English: We will continue to focus on pronouns as well as the use of quotations marks this week.

*Spelling: We are done for the year! Keep up the good spelling skills over the summer!

*Social Studies: We are working on learning about ancient Egypt. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Thurs. 6/4. A list of words was sent home today for your child to learn. We will discuss and learn about the words next week as well.

*Science: We will continue to work on our inquiry unit. The final test will be on Fri. 6/5.

*Math: We will end the year with ch. 16 as we study graphs and data collection. Our final day of math will be Thurs. 6/4. Please send the hard cover textbook given to your child at the beginning of the year back to school by Thurs. 6/4. Thank you!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will continue our study of folktales as we explore myths. We will also work on biographies.

* English: We will work on pronouns.

*Spelling: We will not have spelling this week.

*Social Studies: We will be finishing up our study of Chicago with a jigsaw activity in which the students will be teaching their classmates about aspects of Modern Day Chicago. We will take an open note quiz on Wed. 5/27. We will explore Ancient Egypt next.

* Science: We will begin our unit on scientific inquiry.

*Math: We will finish up ch. 14 on area next week. A practice test will go home on Tues. The test will be on Wed. We will begin ch. 15 on measurement next. We will also focus on 8's division this week.

Odds and Ends:
*Summer Birthdays: Please let me know if your child has a specific day in mind that they would like to celebrate their summer birthday. All children will be honored before the end of the school year, but if you would like to send in treats for the class, please let me know!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will work on myths and begin our unit on biographies.

*English: We will wrap up our friendly letter unit and begin pronouns We will take a friendly letter quiz on Tues. Your child has several blue pages in their English folder that they can review for theq quiz.  Please have your child bring 2 POSTAGE STAMPS if you have not already sent them in. Thank you!

*Spelling: We will work on list 24.

*Science: We will begin our chapter on science inquiry, where we will learn about the scientific method and tools used in science.

*Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago, focusing on modern day locations and famous people of the city.  This week we learned about the Chicago World's Fair and the story of the Heinz pickle pin. I showed the students how they could visit the Heinz website (WITH parent help) and go to the contact link and fill in the form and request that a pickle pin be sent to your home. This MUST be done with an adult. Thank you!

*Math: We will continue to work on ch. 14 where we are exploring Area. The test is tentatively scheduled for Wed. 5/27.  We will also focus on 7's division this week.

Odds and Ends: 

THANK YOU all for all of the kind words, gifts, and gestures of appreciation during this week's Teacher Appreciation. I have the best job in the world because of students and families like YOU! Thank you for making me feel so appreciated and loved: )

*Six Flags Reading Tickets: If your child participated in the Six Flags Reading program, printed certificates/tickets were sent home today. Please look in your child's binder for this piece of paper. Please put it in a safe place until they can be used starting June 8. Thanks!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will work on myths as we continue our study of folktales. 

*English: We will begin our study of friendly letter writing. We will learn the parts of a friendly letter, the correct format. and use our skills to write letters, including one to our 2nd grade pen pal and a celebrity of our choice! A reminder will be written in your child's assignment notebook, but they will need 2 stamps for this unit. Please send them in an envelope or baggie marked with your child's name anytime. Thank you! 

*Spelling: We will work on list 23 this week. Please make sure your child completes all homework in cursive. Thank you!

*Science: We are wrapping up our space unit this week. A study guide was sent home. The final test is scheduled for Thurs. 5/14. 

*Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago. A study guide was sent home for our next open note quiz which will take place on Tues. 5/12. 

* Math: We will be finishing up ch. 13 on Perimeter early this week. A practice test will be sent home Monday and the graded test will be on Tues. 5/12. Our next unit is ch. 14: Area.  We will also focus on 4's division facts this week. Please continue to practice at home! Thank you!

*Math: We began ch. 12 on time. This is a short chapter, so we will be taking the test on Mon. May 4th. We will also work on 9's division facts, with students needing to pass the test by Fri. 5/1.

*Spelling: We will work on list 20 this week (there is no list 19). Homework is due Thurs. and the test will be on Fri.

*Social Studies: We will continue our unit on Chicago, focusing on the Great Chicago Fire and the rebuilding of the city.

*Science: We will continue our study of space as we learn about seasons and the moon.

*Math: Ch. 11 on polygons (2 dimensional shapes) was very short...we will be taking a graded review on Wed. 4/22. Ch. 12 will focus on time. We will work on 10's division facts this week.

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will continue our study of folktales as we read The Beedle and the Bard and Mulan.

*English: We will continue to work on our final copies of our autobiographies.

*Spelling: We will work on analogies, adding part/whole analogies to our study. A test of antonym/synonym and part/whole analogies will be on Fri. 3/27

*Social Studies: We are busy learning about the history of Chicago and the region going as far back as the Ice Age!

*Science: We will be finishing up ch 14 with the test on Tues. 3/24. Our next unit is Space!

*Math: We are working on ch.10 which takes us deeper into fractions. We will also begin our division fast facts starting with 2's division (pass by Fri. 3/27) and then 5's division during the week after break (pass by 4/10).

Week of 3/16

Odds and Ends: 

*Spring is here! We will be having more outdoor recess now. Please send your child with the coat you would like him/her to wear outside. They will need to bring their jacket outside and if they get too warm, they can tie it around their waist. It's often not as warm as the weather man says when we are outside at 11:20!

*Scholastic Book Order: Feb/March book orders due March 20th...please turn in your orders online or send in a check. Thanks!

*Reading: We will begin our ELA Unit 3: Folktales, Fables, and Myths, oh my! We will focus on these genres of text.

*English: We will continue to work on our autobiography writing.

*Spelling: We will continue to work on synonym/antonym analogies.

*Social Studies: We will begin our study of Chicago!

*Science: We will be wrapping up our study of ch. 14 with lesson 4: Sound. A study guide was sent home. The test is scheduled for Tues. 3/24.

*Math: We will continue to work on ch. 9: Fractions.  A practice test will be sent home Tuesday and the chapter 9 test will be Wed. 3/18. Our next unit will dig deeper into fractions.  We will also spend another week practicing mixed multiplication facts. The last week before spring break we will work on 2's division facts.

Thank you to the following families for bringing in snacks or drinks for PARCC testing: Edie, Yates, Salvino, Pangallo, and Gasman! If you still went to send in NUT free snacks or 100% juice boxes next week, the students would really appreciate it!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will focus on reading paired text and comparing how different viewpoints and authors can write about the same topic. We will also finish up on ELA Unit 2 on culture.

*English: We will focus on autobiographies next week.

*Spelling: We will not have a list this week. We will work on analogies.

*Social Studies: We will begin our Chicago unit.

*Science: We will continue to work on ch. 14 as we work with color and sound.

*Math: We are working on fractions in ch. 9. The focus for our fast fact for this week is mixed multiplication facts. Students will work on passing 30 multiplication facts. Then we will begin division fast facts!
