Week of 4/28-5/2

Odds and Ends

Another great week down! Our class celebrated Earth Day by wearing green, blue, and brown. We read about the history of Earth Day, and why it is so important we are aware of the issues in our environment and how we can prevent pollution and the loss of resources. 

If anyone would like to donate a roll of paper towels or to our prize box, our class would greatly appreciate it! :) Thank you!

A Look at Next Week (4/28-5/2)

Reading: We will be working with mysteries.  Students will be assigned different novels and will meet with other classmates reading the same book to have discussions, complete tasks on assigned readings, etc. May reading calendars have been sent home! They are due May 30th. 

English: Each student has been assigned a second grade pen pal. They will work on finalizing their friendly letter.

Spelling: The List 23 pretest will be on Monday.  If your child receives 2 or less wrong, they will be in the "challenge group".  Cursive and all homework is due Thursday.

Social Studies: We will begin studying Egypt next.

Science: We will continue studying Ch. 14 - Heat, Light, and Sound. We will study about reflection and refraction next. 

Math: We will continue studying Ch. 14 - Geometry.  We have been learning about angles, how to classify polygons based on their attributes, and about triangles. The mixed division test will be on Friday, May 2nd.

Prairieview will be celebrating Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22nd.  Wear blue, green, brown, or an Earth Day shirt! Open House will be from 6:30-8:00 on Thursday, May 1st.  Hope to see you all then!

A Look at Next Week (4/21-4/25)

Reading: We will finalize our poetry unit by sharing poems from our "Poetry Passports"! We will begin a mystery unit next.

English: The Unit 6 Pronoun Test is on Tuesday, April 22nd. Students will be writing a letter to their second grade pen pal. 

Spelling: The pretest will be on Monday. If your child receives 2 or less wrong, he or she will be in the "challenge group".  The final test will be on Friday. 

Social Studies: Students have been working hard on all of their beautiful Chicago projects! We will be working on finishing brochures this week. 

Science: We have finished our space unit. Students will finish working on their Planet Trading Cards.  We will begin studying Heat, Light, and Sound next. 

Math: The Chapter 9 test on Properties and Equations is on Monday, April 21. The mixed multiplication test is on Tuesday. We will begin studying geometry next.

The sun is shining and it really is starting to feel like spring! I don't know about you, but I love hearing birds chirping in the morning! :) Hopefully everyone can get outside and enjoy the weather this weekend!

A Look at Next Week (Week of 4/14-4/18) 


Reading: Happy Poetry Month! We will begin wrapping up our poetry unit. Students will finalize the poems they have been working on for their "Poetry Passport".  There will a poetry test on Tuesday.  Students will need to be able to identify different types of figurative language in a poem and know the definitions of vocabulary. April Reading Logs are due Wednesday, April 30th.

English: We will finish up Unit 6 on pronouns.

Spelling: There will be no spelling this week due to early dismissal on Thursday, and no school on Friday.

Social Studies: The final Chicago III Quiz is on April 16th and will be open book. Study guides were sent home earlier this week. We will begin our Chicago Brochures this week!

Science: Make sure to study for the Chapter 10 test on April 17th. Study guides were sent home before spring break.  Students will continue working on their Planet Trading Cards. Our next unit will be heat, light, and sound.

Math: The Chapter 9 test on Properties and Equations is on Thursday, April 17.  Study guides were sent home.  This week will be a mixed review of all multiplication and division facts.  Students will be tested on them on Monday, April 21

Happy Spring Break 3rd grade families! Another great week down here in Mrs. Olsen's class. I hope you all have an enjoyable and safe break! Fingers crossed for some warm weather and sunshine!

A Look at Next Week (Week of 4/7-4/11)

Reading: Students will continue to study poetry by identifying figurative language and poetic devices in various poems. The students will also begin writing poems of their own!  The unit test is tentatively scheduled for April 10th. I will make an announcement if the date will change. Also, April Reading Logs have been sent home with your child.

English: We will continue studying Unit 6 on pronouns. Lesson 4 will be covered next.

Spelling: The List 20 pretest will be on Monday, 4/7, and final test on 4/11. If your child receives 2 or less wrong, they will be in the "Challenge Group".

Social Studies:  We will continue studying Chicago, taking a look at transportation, museums, food, etc. Your child will also be creating a Chicago Brochure. Project will be explained this week.  

Science: We will continue studying Chapter 10 on Earth's Place in the Solar System. Study guides for the test on April 17 have been sent home with your child.  

Math: We will continue Chapter 9 on Properties and Equations. The test is scheduled for April 14. Study guides will be sent home. We will be studying our 12's  multiplication and division facts, and the students will be tested on them on Friday, April 11.

Week of 3/24-3/28



                      Odds and Ends: 

Happy Spring!

What a great first 3 days getting to know your  marvelous children! I cannot wait to spend the rest of the year with them.  We had a great comfy clothes and stuffed animal marble party on Wednesday, and I had a great time getting to know them more by eating lunch with them in the classroom. :) :Let's hope the weather really turns into spring with no more snow!!

3/24 - Roller Skating Party: If your child is attending, they will get their pass from me on Monday.
3/28 - Spring Break begins

A Look At Next Week

Reading - We will finish up the Biography Speech presentations and begin our next unit of poetry. Students will be introduced to poetic devices, vocabulary, figurative language, etc. 

English - We will finish typing final drafts of our narratives and will begin Unit 6 on pronouns.

Spelling - We will resume spelling.  The pretest will be on Monday and the final test will be on Friday. If your child receives 2 or less wrong, they will be in the "challenge" group.  

Social StudiesThe open book quiz (Chicago Quiz II) will be on Tues 3/25. We will continue to work on our "True Story of the Chicago Fire" stories, as told from the cow's point of view. 

Science - We have been reading about the relationship between the moon and Earth and will begin reading about the Solar System next.

Math - We will continue Chapter 9 on equations and properties. We will be studying our 9's multiplication and division facts and will on Friday.

* Spelling: There will be no spelling due to the shortened week. Spelling will resume 3/24.

*Social Studies: We will focus on the rebuilding of Chicago and the World's Fair. A study guide was sent home this week. The open book quiz (Chicago Quiz II) will be on Tues. 3/25.

*Science: We are learning about the relationship between the moon and Earth. We will continue our study of the moon next week.

*Math: We will wrap up our study of ch 11: measurement. A study packet was sent home this weekend and your child was asked to take home their math workbook volume 2 to use to help study. We will focus on 11 multiplication and division facts this week. We will also begin ch. 9 with focuses on equations and properties.

Week of 3/10



Odds and Ends: 

* Thank you to the following families who donated snacks and drinks for ISAT testing: Lafin, Bende, Yu, Cimbalista, Selig, and Allington. We really appreciate it!

* In honor of the students hard work and focus during the ISAT testing, we are going to treat them to an ISAT celebration on Fri. 3/14. We will be showing the movie Despicable Me 2. This movie is rated PG.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

*Scholastic Book Order: March book orders were sent home today. The orders online or in class will be due on Fri. 3/21. Thanks!

A LOOK AT THE NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will continue to work on our biography projects. The goal is for the students to be finished with their independent reading of their chosen biography and have 6 "juicy" facts by 3/12. Juicy facts are not facts like when a person is born, but facts about what made them remarkable and their life stand out from the crowd.

*English. We will continue our study of narrative writing.

*Spelling: We will skip spelling this week due to ISATs.

* Science: We will continue our study of space.

*Social Studies:We will continue to learn about early Chicago and we will focus on the historic Chicago Fire and how Chicago rebuilt after the fire.

*Math: We will wrap up our ch. 11 on measurement. The ch. 11 test is scheduled for Tues. 3/20. Please look in your child's binder for flashcards and a foldable about concepts covered in ch. 11 that you can begin reviewing. A study guide and practice test will be sent home next week  We will also focus on 8's multiplication and division this week. The timed test will be taken for a grade on Fri. 3/14.

Week of 3/3

Odds and Ends:

ISATs: Testing will begin for ISATs this week. I will post the schedule of our tests below. We are looking for volunteers to donate a healthy snack and/or drink to the class to be used during testing. If you are interested in helping us out, please send in a snack and or drink next week. Please send in enough for each child. We have 18 students. We also have nut and gluten (wheat, rye, barley) allergies, so please consider these when shopping. Thank you!

Conferences: An email was sent out by your child's math teacher for spring conferences. Conferences will be held the week of 3/10 with your child's math teacher on an as needed basis.

Maternity Sub: I am happy to announce my maternity leave sub. Miss Angela Simoncelli will be taking over my classroom beginning Monday, March 24th. My last attendance day is Friday, March 21st, unless the baby makes an early appearance! Angela is a certified teacher who is currently an aide on our 5th grade team. She was an aide last year in 3rd grade and I had the pleasure of working with her for part of the day last year. She is familiar with the 3rd grade curriculum and my classroom set up, so the transition will be wonderful. She will be visiting our classroom from time to time before I leave to meet the students and observe how our classroom operates. I am thrilled to have her take over and know the children will be in good hands.  Her and I will be in contact through out my leave and I am planning on visiting the classroom towards the end of the year to help with end of the procedures, etc.

*Reading: We will continue to practice finding text evidence as we write extended responses. We will also work on our biography unit. March reading calendars were passed out. They are due the Friday before Spring Break, 3/28.

*English: We will work on our narrative writing unit.

*Spelling: Due to ISATs, we will not have spelling this week. We will focus on vocabulary building and working on affixes and root words.

*Science: We will begin our unit on Space (Ch. 10).

*Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago, looking back at some historic moments that define  our great city.

*Math: We will continue our study of time in ch. 11. We will also do some quick concept reviews of area, perimeter, polygons, and types of lines and angles.
