Week of 2/3

January Reading logs are due 2/3!

Our daily schedule is changing...we will now have math in the afternoon (12:55-2:10) and ELA in the morning block, with Reading WIN from 11:15-11:45. This will begin Mon. 2/3.

Valentine's Day: If your child would like to pass out Valentine's on Thurs. 2/13,  please keep reading....



1. We have 22 students : 15 boys  and 7 girls 

2. If they choose to pass out Valentine's, they must distribute one to every student. 

3. If you are attaching treats, no nuts, please!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 


*Reading: We will continue to learn about non-fiction text structures and features.  We will be starting researching for our culture report soon. 


* Spelling: A new word list will be sent home with students.  The 3 activities and test will be due on Thurs. 2/13. 

Image result for image of gravity* Social Studies: We will continue to talk about culture. Your child will be learning more about the big culture report and presentation coming up. A sheet will be sent home on Wed, due Mon. 2/10, that will have them select the country and culture they want to research, write, and present on. We will be doing the research and writing at school, but they will have to do the preparation for the presentation at home. More info. coming soon!  

* Science: We will continue our study on traits and inheritance. 

*Mrs.Olsen's Math Class: We will be starting Unit 5, a focus on multiplication and division. We will focus on 8's multiplication this week, with the timed fact fluency test on Fri. 2/7. Looking ahead, we will skip the week of 2/10 for fact tests. See below for the schedule:

Congrats to Michaela and Will  who were the top 2 spellers in our class spelling bee! They will represent our class during the grade level spelling bee next week. Way to go!

*Reading: We will work on non fiction text features and structures. 



* Spelling: We will continue to work on our list from last week. The test is Fri. 1/31 and 3 activities are also due 1/31. 

*Social Studies: We are working on ch. 3 in our Social Studies textbook, focusing on culture, traditions, and immigration and migration. 

*Science: We continue to study inheritance and traits. 

*Mrs.Olsen's Math Class: We are working on fractions. We will work on 7's multiplication facts with a test on Fri. 1/31. A study guide will be sent home and due on Thurs of next week. The Unit 4 test will be on Friday, 1/31.

Week of 1/20

Odds and Ends:

Friday marked the midterm and halfway through 3rd grade! Please check your child's grades and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Thanks!

*Mon. 1/20: No School

*Fri. 1/24: Math: 6's multiplication timed tests

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK:

*Reading and English: We will continue to study culture and tradition. We will also begin learning about non fiction text features and structures. We are reading non-fiction biography books about Martin Luther King, Jr. We are also working on book studies in our WIN class. 

*Spelling: We will start a new list. Words will be handed out on Tues and 3 activities and a test are due Jan 31.

* Social Studies: We will continue to work on ch. 3 on Immigration and Culture,a great connection to what we are focusing on in reading. We will be sending home information about our culture day project soon.

*Science: We will continue to study the wolf pack at the fictional "Graystone National Park" as we learn about traits and inheritance. 

*Mrs. Olsen's Math Class: We have been busy exploring measurement as we learn about the metric measurement system. Be sure to ask your child about what tools and terms of measurement are measured when we discuss mass, volume, and length.  For example, mass uses a balance and measures using grams and kilograms. We will work on 6's multiplication facts this week with a test on Friday.

Week of 1/13

Image result for image of happy 2020Welcome back and Happy 2020! I hope all of you had a wonderful, relaxing and fun break together. We are in the 2nd half of 3rd grade, which is hard to believe!

UPCOMING EVENTS: 



*Fri. 1/17: Spelling: 3 activities and test due

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading:  We are continuing our unit on culture and traditions. We are doing an informative/persuasive writing unit on what animal teeth we would want to have and why after reading If I Had Animal Teeth.  We are finishing up the projects and will read a book called The Matchbox Diary as we learn about another way people treasure and keep special objects as a tradition.


*Spelling:  3 activities and the next test will be on Fri. 1/17.  Please ask your child how many activities they are done with so they can plan accordingly.

Image result for image of culture day cartoon* Science:  We are continuing to work the Amplify Unit, where we will focus on inheritance and traits of wolves and bears.

*Social Studies: We will start ch. 3 on immigration. We will tie this unit into our ELA curriculum as we focus on culture, tradition and where our ancestors and relatives have come from.  Look for information about our culture day projects coming in a few weeks.

*Mrs. Olsen's Math Class: We are starting Unit 4 on measurement and fractions. We began with telling time to the minute and working on elapsed time.  This can be a tricky concept, so its a good skill to practice at home. We will work on metric measurement next. We are also working with 4's multiplication facts with a test on Fri. 1/17.

*Spelling: A new spelling sort will be sent home on Mon. 1/6. The 3 activities and test will be on Fri. 1/17. 


* Science: We will continue our work on Amplify Science as we continue to explore inheritance and traits.

Week of 12/16


Odds and Ends: 

We had such a great time at the Tivoli yesterday! The students were respectful and well behaved. An exciting week is ahead....the last week of 2019! We will be bowling on Tuesday am and we are planning to show the movie Elf to the grade level on Friday. Please email me if you do NOT give your child permission to watch this movie and we can make other arrangements for your child during that time. Thank you!

*Math: We are wrapping up Unit 2. We will have a review day on Wed. 12/18 and Practice tests are due that day. The test will be on Thurs. 12/19. We will begin Unit 4 on 1/6.

Week of 12/9

Welcome to December!  Winter has arrived! Please remember to dress your child for the weather because we do try to go outside for recess.

Math: 5's multiplication test 

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Spelling: 3 activities are due on Fri. 12/13. Your child has been given several times during the last week to work on these so they should have at least 2 activities done. The test is on Fri. 12/13. 

*Reading and Language Arts: This week we will focus on character traits and extended responses. We will determine traits of characters in stories and recall important events in stories. We are learning all about culture and traditions. We will be talking about holiday traditions and tooth fairy traditions. 

December Reading calendars are due on Mon. 1/6. 

*Science: We began to work on our first unit in science: trait and inheritances. Ask your child about the wolves and deer game we played, which focuses on why animals work and stay in groups. 

*Mrs. Olsen's Math Class: Unit 2 continues with multiplication strategies. We will also work on 5's multiplication with a test on Fri. 12/13.

Weeks of 11/25 and 12/2

Happy Thanksgiving!

Image result for image of thanksgiving clip artToday is the end of Trimester 1. Grades will be finalized soon. What a great first part of the school year! I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your families. This blog will include information for the next 2 weeks.

Wed-Fri 11/27-29: No School: Happy Thanksgiving!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading/ELA: We are working on reading and writing our own fables. We are also working on nouns and wrote about what we are thankful with applying our knowledge of nouns: a person, place, and thing. We will be starting our next unit when we return from break, a study of culture and immigration and traditions. We begin with the story A Keeping Quilt.  

The disguised turkeys looked amazing! The students did a great job persuading the farmer to save each one. They are display in the Fab Lab window being enjoyed by all who walk by.

*Spelling: New word sorts will be going home on Mon. 12/2. 3 activities and the test will be on 12/13.

*Science: We will continue our new science curriculum as we study traits and inheritance. We will begin this unit on 12/2.

*Mrs. Olsen's Math class: Unit 2 continues with work on multiplication strategies. Please have your child study their facts every night! There will be a short checkpoint on multiplication on 11/25. We will focus on 2's x facts the week of 12/2 with a graded fact test on 12/6.

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 


*Reading: We worked  fluency, context clues, and expression and we did readers theaters' with myths this week. Check out our seesaw posts for pictures of the performances today. They all did a great job! We will continue to work on leveled texts in small groups next week  as we continue our study of folktales. 

*Spelling: We are in the second week of our spelling lists. The 3 activities and test is Fri. 11/22. 

*Social Studies: Special thanks to our parent volunteers Mrs. Zapata, Mrs. Puelo, Mrs. Antonopoulos, Mr. Brooks, and Mrs. Tylka for joining us on our Downers Grove field trip. Despite the snowy day, we had a great time!

*Mrs. Olsen's Math class: Unit 2 continues with work on multiplication strategies. Please have your child study their facts every night!  Starting next week, we will take a weekly fact test on Fridays up to 12's.  Here is the schedule:

The order is so we get the easier facts done first and build confidence and practice over time. Week of 11/11

Odds and Ends:

Our Downers Grove field trip is on Mon. 11/11. Please have your child dress for walking and for the weather as we get off and on the bus throughout the day.   Also, you can send a snack in with your child if they would like to eat it before we leave.


Veteran's Day: In honor of Veteran's Day, we will have a school wide assembly honoring veteran's who have a Prairieview connection. It is a very emotional and touching assembly and meant so much to the students and veterans. Please ask your child about this special assembly.

*Mon. 11/11: Downers Grove Field Trip

*Wed. 11/13: Disguised Turkeys due 




A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will continue to discuss myth's as we learn about King Midas and reading other myths as we work on readers theatre. We are focusing on character traits and using text evidence to help answer questions. We are also focusing on fluency, articulation, and public speaking through our readers theatre. 


*English: We will be using our disguised turkeys (which are due Wed) to write a persuasive paragraph to convince the farmer not to eat him/her on Thanksgiving! We will also work on nouns. 

*Mrs. Olsen's Math Class: We will take a step back to Unit 2 which is an introduction to Multiplication.
