Week of 4/29

Odds and Ends:

*Thank you for everyone who made it out to our Spring Open House! The students were so excited to share their classroom and show off their hard work. It was great to see everyone!

*Helping Hand Grams: Have your child send a helping hand gram to a friend or teacher to cheer them up for 25 cents a gram while they help to raise money for charity! Ask your child about these grams!

*Thank you to all of the families that donated glue sticks to the classroom. It is so great to have such generous, helpful parents! Thanks!!!!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK:

*Reading: We will continue to work on our poetry unit. Please review the 6 vocabulary words that go with this unit. We will have a short graded review on the vocab on Tues. 4/30.  Your child should be working on reading their Good Fit Book for their cereal box project.

*English: We will be wrapping up our ch. 6 pronouns unit. The test is schedule for Wed. 5/1.

*Spelling: We will work on list 26 this week.

*Social Studies: We will be finishing our Chicago unit. There is not a cumulative test. We will begin our next unit on Ancient Egypt.

*Science: We have completed our space mission and graduated Space Academy! Hooray! We will begin our next unit on the scientific method very soon!

*Math: We have been working hard on multiplying greater numbers. We need to keep practicing our math facts so that these more challenging problems are not as frustrating. We will have a test on ch. 23 on  Thurs.  5/2. Look for a study guide coming home on Mon. We will begin ch. 24 dividing greater numbers this week. We will also focus on 8's division facts with a test on Fri.

Week of 4/22

Odds and Ends: 

* Open House has been reschedule for Tues. 4/23 from 6:30-8:00. Hope to see you there! Wear your Chicago Sports gear to support the 3rd grade Chicago theme!

*Donations Needed: We are almost all out of glue sticks. Any donation of glue sticks would be greatly appreciated!!! Also, at this time of year, many students start running out of supplies. Please ask your child if they have enough pencils, Dry Erase markers, and a pair of scissors to get them through the year. Any of these supplies can be used in 4th grade too!

*Mon. 4/22: Earth Day: Wear your Earth Day shirt or wear green. Try to pack a waste free lunch!

*Thurs. 4/25: Social Studies: Chicago Quiz III Open book

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will focus on poetry, figurative language, and fluency and expression next week during our poetry unit. We will be reading and writing poetry. We will also select a good fit book to be used for a book project. Look for more information coming soon!

*English: We will work on our pronouns unit.

*Spelling: Next up: List 24! Business as usual: Mon: pretest, Thurs: homework due, Fri: test!

*Social Studies: We will be wrapping up our unit on Chicago in the upcoming week. The final open book quiz is Thurs. Look for a study guide that was sent home this week. We will finish our Chicago travel brochures. Please ask your child to see their rough draft so you can help them look over their work for the brochure.

*Science:  The students have almost successfully graduated from the Olsen Space Academy! We are working on the last unit, which focuses on the sun, planets, and stars. We made giant trading cards about each planet. So cool!

*Math: We will continue to work on multiplying greater numbers (ch. 23). We will also focus on 7's division facts this week. The test will be on Fri. 5/26.

Week of 4/15



Odds and Ends: 


*Open House: We will have our Spring Open House on Thurs. 4/19 at 6:30-8:00. We look forward to you stopping into our classroom to see what we have been up to! The theme for 3rd grade open house in Chicago, so if you have any favorite Chicago sports gear, you can wear it to show your support!

During open house, you will have the opportunity to view the children's biography report videos. With the help of Mrs. Csorba (our IMC teacher) and Mrs. Foellmer (our tech support teacher), we video taped each student and made a QR (Quick Reponse) code for each video. The videos are uploaded to the internet using google docs and not accessible to anyone without the QR code.  To use the QR code, you need a smart device, like a smart phone or ipad. You can download a free QR reader prior to open house so you can click the special bar code and watch the video. Isn't technology cool?!?!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will continue to focus on non fiction reading strategies. We will also begin our unit on reading and writing poetry.

*English: We will be working on unit 6: pronouns.

*Spelling: We will work on list 23. A pretest will be given Mon. Homework will be due Thurs. The graded test will be on Fri.

*Social Studies: We are working on the last portion of our Chicago unit. We are moving into modern day Chicago.

*Science: We will focus on ch. 10 lesson 3, which focuses on the planets in the solar system and the sun. The chapter 10 test will be announced soon. Look for a study guide coming home soon!

*Math: We will work on 6's division this week. The graded test will take place Fri. We will also work on division concepts in class, as well as problem solving. We will be working on ch. 17 patterns and ch. 22 multiplying greater numbers in the upcoming days and weeks.

Week of 4/8

Odds and Ends:

*Book Worm Angels: This time of year brings about spring cleaning...don't forget PV while you clean! We are collecting used or new children's books to donate to schools in need. Also, any paper products that you may be throwing away can be recycled in our Paper Retriever Bin...your paper recyclables can help our school earn money! Thank you for supporting both important causes!

*Jump For Heart: Please look in your child's binder for information about this optional fundraiser.

* Open House: Mark your calendars for PV's Open House on Thurs. 4/19 from 6:30-8:00 pm. Hope to see you there!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will continue to work on an autobiography mini unit. We will also work on non-fiction reading skills.

*English: We finished our friendly letter writing unit with a letter to a famous person. Ask your child who they decided to write. We are hopeful we will hear back from them. We will work on some creative writing. Our next unit will be about pronouns.

*Spelling: Due to the shortened week, there will be no spelling next week.

*Science: We are working on ch. 10 lesson about the moon. Work with your child to watch the moon as it changes phases this month. See if you can chart the phases and name them as the month goes on.

*Social Studies: We will continue to learn about the history of Chicago. An open book review will take place on Thurs. 4/11. A review guide of the topics that will be quizzed was sent home this week. It is orange and should be in your child's binder.

Also, in social studies, we were talking about the World's Fair in Chicago and about the Heinz pickle pin. Ask your child about this story and you can go to the Heinz website http://www.heinz.com/our-company/investor-relations/request-information.aspx and request that they send you a pickle pin for free!

*Math: We are busy learning about decimals. The test for ch. 19 will take place on Wed. 4/10. We will spend Mon. 4/8 reviewing the materials for the test. We will also work on 4's division. The 4's division test will be on Thurs. 4/11. Please spend extra time reviewing these facts at home since it is a short school week. Thanks!
