Thank you to everyone who came and toured our classroom for Open House. The students were very proud to show all of the amazing and fun learning we do in 3rd grade. I hope you enjoyed seeing your child's work!

UPCOMING EVENTS: 

*Tues. 5/1: Reading: April Reading calendars due

* Fri. 5/4: Math: 7's division fast fact
Spelling: 3 activities and test

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK: 

*Reading: We will continue to read and discuss The One and Only Ivan. We are also working on asking and answering questions as we read to check for comprehension.

*English: We will  begin our friendly letter writing unit.  A packet will be given to the students on Mon or Tues of next week. The notes will serve as their study guide for the friendly letter writing quiz on Tues. 5/8.  Please send in 2 STAMPS for us to use during this unit.  Thanks! 

*Spelling: We will continue to work with the same words this week. 3 activities and the test will be on Fri. 5/4. 

Image result for solar system* Science: We are busy learning about planets as we work in groups to make planet trading cards. We will take an open book quiz on lesson 3 on Fri. 5/4. 

*Social Studies: We are beginning the last third of our Chicago unit.

Week of 4/23

Odds and Ends: 

Image result for image of open house schoolSpring Open House: We are looking forward to showing off our hard work at our Spring Open House. We will have Open House and a Book Fair on Thurs. April 26 from 6:30-8:00 pm. Our theme is Chicago, so if you'd like to get festive, you can come wearing your favorite Chicago team gear. Hope to see you there!

* Tues. 4/24: Spirit Day: Neon Nickels Day: Wear bright colors and bring nickels
Math: Unit 6 Test 

*Wed. 4/25: Spirit Day: Dazzling Dimes Day: Wear sparkles or fancy things and bring dimes

* Thurs. 4/66: Crazy Quarters Day: Dress crazy and bring quarters!

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK:

*Reading: We will continue to read and discuss The One and Only Ivan. We are working in comprehension of the text through text dependent questions and context clues to decode difficult words. We are also studying the use of figurative language used in the text, such as similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia.  We didn't take the Ivan review #2 this week, so we will take it next week. It will be open book and open note. 

*English:  We are working in free writing and applying our skills of proper sentence structure, grammar, and quality writing to our work.

*Spelling: A new word sort will be passed out on Monday. The test and 3 activities will be on Fri. May 4th.

*Science: We will begin a short unit on planets and our place in the solar system. 

Image result for image of chicago*Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago, moving onto more modern day information. We will learn about fun places to visit as we make our very own brochures about popular Chicago tourist destinations. 

*Mrs. Olsen's Math Class:  Unit 6 is coming to an end. Your child's Unit 6 study guide/practice test is due on Mon. 4/23. The Unit 6 test is Tues. 4/24.  We will begin Unit 7 next week, which explores greater number multiplication concepts and fractions. We will also work on 6's division facts. The following schedule will take place in the upcoming weeks for division fact facts: 7's, 8's, 9's, and then 12's.

Week of 4/16

Odds and Ends:

The students have been doing an outstanding job as we did PARCC testing for Math this week. Next week we will finish up with ELA PARCC testing on Mon, Wed. and Thurs. If your child has missed any tests, they will make them up on Fri. 4/13 or Fri. 4/20.

A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK:

*Reading: We will continue to read and discuss The One and Only Ivan.  We will be taking a open book selection quiz during the week as well (date TBD).  We are working on using text to support our answers. We are also focusing on figurative language (similes, metaphors, etc) and interesting word choices (synonyms).

*Spelling: Please check in with your child to see how much homework they have completed. 3 activities are due on Fri. 4/20. The test will also be on Fri. 4/20.

Image result for chicago worlds fair*Social Studies: We are busy working on learning about the Great Chicago Fire, rebuilding the city after the fire, and the World's Fair. A study guide was sent home on Fri. 4/13. Your child can complete the study guide to be used on the quiz on Fri. 4/20. They will NOT be able to use their Chicago packet or book, but they will be able to use the study guide.

*Mrs. Olsen's Math Class: We are wrapping up Unit 6. We will focus on fractions. A study guide/practice test will be sent home on Mon. 4/16. It will be due on Mon. 4/23 when we review for the test that will be on Tues. 4/24.  We will also work on 4's division facts next week.
